Stuck overseas without anything to watch? I am and it drives me bonkers. I am an absolute TV nut and CNN International could only entertain me for so long. All I wanted to do was watch Netflix and perpetuate the “Americans watch too much TV” stereotype, but I knew it was inaccessible here. Then, my inner-geek kicked in and I found a solution. Normally when you are outside of the USA and try to access Netflix, the website and applications reveal a pop up message that says something along the lines of, “Netflix is not available in your part of the world at this time.”
This tutorial will also make ABC Player, Hulu Plus, Pandora, etc. work as well.
1. Go to the app store and download and install VPN Express. It is free and comes with a trial credit, but you will need to purchase more credit at some point. It is cheap though and even 1 GB will last you plenty of time. VPN stands for Virtual Private Network and it disguises your IP Address so that whatever site or app you are browsing thinks you are in the United States.
2. Configure your VPN in the settings section of your iPad and turn on the VPN. Learn more here.
3. Start watching! When you are done, be sure to turn your VPN off in settings as to not waste those GBs during normal browsing.
I have watched all four seasons of “Mad Men” since I figured this out. I have always wanted to watch this show and am obsessing over it. I think the 1960s is my new dream decade… as long as I can bring my iPad and digital camera with me.
Update 22 February 2013: Please note the date of this post. I no longer use this method, and I sold my iPad, so now I use AstrillVPN to watch shows on my computer. It is my favorite paid VPN service these days because you can use it on multiple devices, as long as you are not using it on them at the same time. Therefore, I have it on my computer, phone, and iPad. Hope this note helps out.
Update 4 October 2013: My VPN expired, and while I’d like to renew it, I am cutting my expenses and am currently using Media Hint extension for Chrome to watch my shows. It works for Showtime Anytime, Netflix, ABC, NBC, and CBS, which are all I have tried so far. It does work for YouTube regional settings and Google still knows I am in Germany, but it accomplishes my main goal of watching shows. Alternatively, I use Movie4k.to for streaming certain content.
Update 22 December 2013: I switch between using Media Hint, listed above, and Hola Unblocker extension for Chrome. A Netflix-obsessed friend of mine loves this one because you can switch to VPNs all over the world and therefore also access the content from the likes of Netflix Brazil, Canada, Netherlands, etc.
